A few months ago I noticed a lot of media stands (CD/DVD racks) on sale at every home decor store in my town. I also started to see dozens of them in all shapes and sizes pop up in my favorite thrift stores. I realized this is because so many people have stopped buying DVDs and CDs since everything is now available through digital downloading or streaming. (And those of us who still have a few BluRays keep them in our media centers hidden behind closed cabinet doors!).
Of course I started thinking, ‘what could I possible make out of something still in good condition but not needed for its intended purpose anymore…?’ Since I’m always in need of new storage, as my wardrobe collection expands, it wasn’t a far leap in imagination to DIY makeover a media stand into a shoe and accessories rack!
I found a wood DVD rack for a few dollars and decided to spray paint the sides and cover the shelves with marble print contact paper.
Obviously I realize you won’t necessarily be able to find a rack exactly like this one but it’s a pretty common design, so you should be able to find something similar, or at least get some makeover inspiration, before throwing out any media stands you already have!
See? easy peasy! 5 steps and an afternoon was all it took for me to disassemble, paint, paper and reassemble the stand.
