I Cut Up Two Pieces of Clothing from the Victoria Beckham Target Collection!

I can’t remember the last time I purchased a piece of clothing (used or new) without altering it in some way! I love re-designing clothes so they’re uniquely mine. If you’ve been reading this blog long It’s probably not surprising to discover I had something special planned as soon as I saw what the Victoria Beckham x Target collaboration looked like! From the minute I laid eyes on the scallop sleeve blouse and the shoulder bow dress I knew there was no way I’d wear them as-is off the rack, and I’d enjoy cutting them up!

Wearing Victoria Beckham for Target Dress over a VBxTarget Blouse

The day the entire collection dropped I went online to purchase the dress and blouse. Unfortunately only the dress was sold online, so I snatched it up while my S.O. went to the nearest Target in search of the blouse! He knew I’d been planning this project for quite some time and actually offered to go for me when I exclaimed in dismay that I had only been able to order the dress! Truthfully I think he just wanted some ice cream and was using me as an excuse to go to Target, but I let it slide and thanked him (it was a Sunday morning and I had no intention of getting out of my pajamas that early!) After he brought home the blouse that Sunday I chose the exact shoes and bag I wanted to take pictures for this blog post with when the dress was done! (Side Note: One of my favorite fashion bloggers styled the original orange version of this dress with blue shoes and earrings too! Great minds think alike when you’re Southern girls!)

I originally took the pieces to a tailor with sketches of what I wanted done, but it was going to take longer than I cared to wait for them to finish, so I ended up going back and picking everything back up so I could DIY it myself! To create my perfect dress I layered the top part of the blouse underneath the shoulders of the dress and sewed them together before trimming out the excess torso fabric. Next, I opened both sides of the dress and put in knife-pleat chiffon inserts (from an old maxi dress I destructed years ago!). On one side the insert goes from the hem to the waist and on the other side the insert goes up the length of the dress and stops under the arm. The original dress shape was a shift style, which is never flattering on me since I’m 5’2″ with wide hips, so to accentuate the new, a-line silhouette I put two tabs over the chiffon pleats on the long seam to cinch in the waist and eliminate overflow of fabric when I wear the dress belted.

I seriously think you are so COOL for altering clothes to make them your own. I aspire to be this creative and a skilled seamstress but every time I end up seeing or altering something it looks so bad. I guess I need more practice!!
