Styling leggings is one of the most challenging fashion conundrums I get asked for help with as a stylist! My first piece of advice is to find the right pair of leggings. They need to be of durable quality, the correct size and length, and made of a thick enough material never to be seen through! The hem shouldn’t go past the inside ankle bone and the leg should not ‘scrunch’ up at all. Wearing the correct fit and length is necessary for presenting a polished, put together look.
My go-to pair of leggings is THIS one from American Giant, and I love Hue brand leggings as well. Styling leggings does not need to be boring or difficult! The ONE rule to wearing leggings instead of pants is to cover your bum! Just because you can wear leggings as pants doesn’t mean you should. Beyond covering your bum, pretty much anything goes! Let me show you what I mean…

This is probably my favorite way to wear leggings to the office. Oversized men’s button down + statement blazer + stiletto booties. You can get away with wearing a blousy button down like this because the bottom half of the outfit is well-fitted (thank you leggings!) and the blazer gives you that professional, polished look, suitable for the office.

Long tee + vintage sweater + smoking loafers. THIS is my absolute favorite tee to wear with leggings. It covers the necessary areas and can be worn so many different ways. A vintage, name brand sweater, like the St. John one shown above, can instantly make anything look more professional with it’s structured shape and elegant style. If you don’t have a velvet smoking loafer, any type of professional flat or loafer will work that matches your sweater. Maintaining a continuous color palette through your outfit elevates the look of simple leggings.

This is perhaps the most simple look to style on one’s own. Put a button down dress on over your leggings, but button it down only to the waist. If the dress has belt loops, wear the belt with it. Add a chunky pair of booties and you’re done! To finish the look simply choose jewelry and a handbag that you would normally wear with that dress and shoes! You can also go very dramatic with this look and wear ultra sparkly jewelry. To me, there’s something so elegant about a long, open front dress, over leggings with boots.

This outfit is perfect for when you want to wear leggings to the office in warmer weather. Add the long tee I mentioned earlier and over that throw on a sleeveless vest or duster. I found a vintage Chanel tuxedo dress that looks like a long vest and I love wearing it over leggings and a shirt! Pair with your favorite strappy heels and an over-sized bag for a perfectly chic and put together office look! A long necklace and some stacked bracelets looks great with this outfit.

This ensemble is perfect for accessing your hygge at the office! Wear a long tee or tunic top, add your favorite long duster sweater, comfy booties and a belt. The only rule for this outfit is making sure it matches! Choosing complimentary pieces keeps this look from being too casual for work. I love to wear some red lipstick and my hair in a slick pony tail or high bun to elevate the visual vibe from comfy to professional and put together.
