Ah yes. Time to pull out the Halloween/Harvest/Fall decor as the temps get cooler and the clothes get thicker! Y’all know I have a really difficult time with seasonal decor — and by ‘difficult time’ I mean I dislike it! I don’t know why, but being expected to mess with my aesthetic when the seasons change, gives me hives. Don’t get me wrong; I love Christmas ornaments, pumpkins, garlands, wreaths, all of it. Just not in my personal space. Every year it becomes a challenge to make my house festive while still keeping in line with my personal aesthetic and not feeling like things have been taken over by the spirit of Martha Stewart! If you’re in the same boat as me, and love seasonal decor, but hate that it harps your vibe, read on for inspiration on integrating seasonal decor with your own style!
Note: I think everyone knows where to purchase Hermes throws and pillows (shown in my photos below) so I only linked ‘inspired by’ versions of the real thing for those of you who want the ‘look’ without the designer price tag!
Stick with your own color scheme. Choose decor that compliments what you already have in your living space. Nowadays there is decor available in every color palette, so there’s no need to go full on black and orange for Halloween if your house is pink and gray! Find some gray marble skulls and pink sugar skull pumpkins, drippy pink taper candles, gray mummy wrapping gauze, etc… Match the holiday to YOU, not the other way around!
“Halloween-i-fy” everyday objects. Have a painting on your wall of grandmother and grandfather? Drape it in gauze and place a cluster of candles near by for a haunted house vibe! Place glasses on your bar car on top of disposable holiday themed coasters, replace the candles you already have out with skull shaped ones.
Invest in a *few* pieces of holiday themed decor that match what you already have and use them every year. There’s no need to purchase new items every year, just to stress over storing them, or having to throw them away after a month because they’re cheaply made. I have 5 sturdy pumpkins I really like that I pull out every year because they’re black and white and match almost anything! I even move them around my house from the table to the bar to the living room depending on whether or not I’m hosting a party, or have guests over.
Keep it simple, but significant. There’s no need to decorate to the 9’s. It’s easy to get a ‘vibe’ for the holiday you’re celebrating without decorating every inch of your house with seasonal decor! Select a few choice items that create a clear impact and breath easy, enjoying the simplicity of working with your space, vs. against it, for the holidays!
