It’s official – all my siblings are grown ups! I can’t believe it! It seems like just last year we were barefoot, running through the grass, playing Cowboys and Indians (yes, I grew up in the 90s when kids had books and sticks instead of iPads and wireless bluetooth headphones to entertain themselves with!). Last weekend my family had an intimate little party to celebrate the final “21st!”
This post is less about my little brother though and more about this very last minute decor idea my Mum and I came up with the morning of the party! I had planned all along to have a “Party Like It’s 1996” banner somewhere in the dining room to commemorate his birthday year, but really had not decided where it was going to go. In my dining room is a HUGE window with wide, white, slat-style blinds. I’ve wanted to put curtains up on that window since 2015 when I moved into this house but just never found the perfect curtain rods, so it never happened! 3 hours before a party really isn’t the time to start hanging curtains, but I deeply dislike the look of plain blinds. In that moment an idea was born!
We used double sided tape to adhere each letter to the blinds, mimicking the look of a popular felt letter board, but in an oversized version! We cut the letters out with a Silhouette machine. I used a font called “COUTURE” for the words and “Elephant” for the numbers. Each letter is full sized to an 8.5″ x 11″ piece of glitter cardstock.
A few days later it occurred to me maybe I’m not the only one with blinds who wishes to disguise them during a party, so I thought I’d share my little DIY here on the blog as some fun inspiration! You could use a window with blinds to display the party’s hashtag, a slogan, motto, the birthday person’s name, or as a photo backdrop and put words, letters or numbers, just around the edges. Anything you can think to do with a standard sized letter board could be put on a window with blinds! What do you think?
Happiest of birthday wishes to my not-so-little-brother! Here’s to many more parties and celebrations!
